COMET Webinar: Dr Jin Fang, University of Leeds: 29 October 2025, 3PM UK time

COMET (UK Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tectonics) invites you to the next instalment of our COMET webinar series, viewable from the home office.

Satellite Geodetic Constraints on the Kinematics and Dynamics of the Tibetan Plateau

Wednesday 29th October 2025 at 3pm UK time (4pm CEST / 8am PDT)

Dr Jin Fang

University of Leeds, UK

Please note the slight change from our usual time, this seminar will start at 3pm (UK time)

Please register at:  https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/90d76047-3da9-4a4a-96fc-1a9ba2429223@b311db95-32ad-438f-a101-7ba061712a4e

(After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to join the webinar)

Abstract: The ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates has produced one of the most extensive regions of continental deformation on Earth, spanning from the Himalayas through the Tibetan Plateau to Central Asia. Continents deform through a combination of continuous distributed strain and localised deformation along lithospheric-scale faults. However, the relative importance of these processes – and the extent to which major fault zones control the overall deformation field – remain uncertain, partly due to the limited spatial resolution of previous geodetic observations. In this talk, I will examine earthquake-cycle deformation associated with the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake in eastern Tibet, revealing the behaviour of a low-straining fault throughout the earthquake cycle and the distributed nature of seismic hazard beyond major faults. I will then present new constraints on interseismic strain across southeastern Tibet, showing that total deformation is nearly equally partitioned between fault-localised and diffuse off-fault strain. Finally, I will introduce a faulted thin viscous shell model that explicitly represents discontinuities within a continuous medium, offering new insight into how major fault systems modulate the large-scale dynamics of the India-Eurasia collision.

Pal(a)eoPERCS Early Career Seminar Series

Pal(a)eoPERCS (Pal(a)eo EaRly Career Seminars) is a weekly, virtual, inclusive, accessible, grassroots, institution-independent, global seminar series featuring Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in all fields of pal(a)eo-sciences (-ntology, -oceanography, -anthropology, -chemistry, -climatology, -seismology, and many more). Since its inception in June 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pal(e)eoPERCS has hosted over 220 talks across disciplines. Currently, we have over 2400 individuals from all career stages and paths, based around the world, who follow Pal(a)eoPERCS via our mailing list. Seminars take place on Zoom, and are posted on Youtube for asynchronous viewing.

We invite you to join in the celebration of excellent ECR-driven pal(a)eo-science from around the globe. There are currently three main ways to be involved:

  1. Sign up for our mailing list ( https://paleopercs.com/participate/ ) to get weekly announcements about upcoming seminars and opportunities. All pal(a)eo-fans, regardless of career stage or academic status, are enthusiastically welcome to attend live seminars and watch the recorded seminars!
  2. Nominate an ECR speaker - this can be yourself, a colleague, or someone you would like to hear give a seminar. We particularly appreciate nominations from outside the US, UK, and Western Europe ( https://paleopercs.com/nominate-speakers/ ).
  3. Apply to join the Pal(a)eoPERCS Leadership Committee - we are currently looking for some ECRs with interest or experience in funding outreach and social media communication. Learn more and apply to the committee by Monday, November 10, 2025, here:   https://forms.gle/PycYnJdkcsepavhRA

FAQ:  What do you mean by “early career”?

Traditionally, “early career” in Pal(a)eoPERCS has meant graduate student or postdoc, but we recognize that there are many possible career paths and trajectories (linear and nonlinear), and if you identify as “early career” working in a pal(a)eo or pal(a)eo-adjacent field/workspace, we would love to hear from you - our leadership committee has always included folks outside of the traditional graduate student or postdoc roles, and having this breadth of expertise and perspectives has been a core strength of ours.

We may be biased, but we love working on Pal(a)eoPERCS and interacting with the global pal(a)eo community. We hope you will consider joining us in this adventure!

The Economic Geography Research Group (EGRG) of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) is delighted to announce details of a new online webinar series taking place over the coming academic year.

Emerging voices in economic geography will showcase new research and spotlight emerging scholars in the field whose work brings attention to new geographies, methodologies and theoretical frameworks that challenge the status quo and enrich our collective understanding of economic geography.

More information is provided below. Please save the dates for now — a sign-up link and full details will be circulated in the next week.

Emerging voices in economic geography

Economic geography is a subdiscipline that goes through ‘periods of introspection’ (Bathelt et al., 2017), where the field grapples with tensions between calls for greater pluralism and the desire for clearer disciplinary boundaries.

In the last few years, the discipline has witnessed a growing number of critical voices calling for greater diversity, inclusion and openness to new perspectives, especially from those who have held less influence in the subdiscipline — particularly early career scholars and women (Johns and Hall, 2024; Pugh, 2018; Rosenman et al., 2020).

These critiques are not just about representation; they are about the kinds of knowledge that are valued, the geographies that are studied, and the futures that are imagined. New voices generate dynamism in economic geography, challenge established boundaries and advocate for theoretical and methodological pluralism which is key to understanding the complexity of the global economy and the ongoing ‘polycrisis'.

This series spotlights early career researchers whose work brings fresh perspectives and critical insights to economic geography. Each webinar will feature two speakers in conversation with one another and the audience, exploring a distinct economic geography theme and generating new insights.

Save the dates

All sessions take place on Thursdays at 1pm (UK time) with the following themes:

  • 20 November 2025 – Housing

  • 5 February 2026 – Regional development

  • 2 April 2026 – Finance and sustainability

  • 28 May 2026 – Technology, platforms, and labour

The first webinar will feature Tim White (Queen Mary University of London, UK) and Ifigeneia Dimitrakou (Universität Zürich / University of Zurich, Switzerland) discussing their research on the geographies of housing.

More information and registration links will follow soon — but for now, please save the dates and circulate among your networks.

Get in touch with Liam Keenan (EGRG Chair, liam.keenan1@nottingham.ac.uk) or Luke Green (Events Officer, l.a.green2@newcastle.ac.uk) if you have any questions.
