PhD Opportunity: How Earthquakes Become Tsunamis: Investigating Rupture Propagation into Subduction Zone Accretionary Prisms

PhD opportunity for applications as part of the IAPETUS DTP ( https://iapetus.ac.uk/ ) – please share widely.

How Earthquakes Become Tsunamis: Investigating Rupture Propagation into Subduction Zone Accretionary Prisms (IAP-25-118)  https://iapetus.ac.uk/studentships/how-earthquakes-become-tsunamis-investigating-rupture-propagation-into-subduction-zone-accretionary-prisms/

Supervisors: Alexis Cartwright-Taylor (Heriot-Watt University), Stefan Nielsen (University of Durham), Uisdean Nicholson (Heriot-Watt University) and Amy Gough (Heriot-Watt University)

This mainly experimental project will investigate rupture propagation in IODP (Expedition 405 JTRACK) samples collected from the Japan trench to constrain tsunami risk from shallow splay faults in the accretionary prism through the following:

  • Micro-scale deformation experiments to explore damage evolution with in-situ synchrotron x-ray imaging
  • Core-scale deformation and rotary shear experiments to characterise frictional and micro-seismic behaviour
  • Integration with large-scale JTRACK information to develop geomechanical models of rupture propagation in the accretionary prism

Informal enquiries to a.cartwright-taylor@hw.ac.uk, stefan.nielsen@durham.ac.uk, U.Nicholson@hw.ac.uk or A.Gough@hw.ac.uk

Key Dates:
Applications open: 7 November 2025
Deadline: 5 January 2026 at 12:00 GMT
International applicants: Contact supervisors befor 8 December 2025

  • Experimental geomechanics & geochemistry
  • Neutron/X-ray tomography
  • Earth Observation (EO) data
  • Risk mapping & science-to-policy translation

Key Dates:

Applications open: 7 November 2025
Deadline: 5 January 2026 at 12:00 GMT
International applicants: Contact supervisors by 8 December 2025

Full details & how to apply: iapetus.ac.uk/how-to-apply
