Two Phd positions - aeromagnetic and geophysical inversion investigation of the Levant Basin, eastern Mediterranean

For a collaborative German-Israeli project, funded by DFG and ISF, on the lithospheric structure of the Levant Basin, we are recruiting two PhD students.
The position at Kiel University involves 3D inversion and thermal modeling (attached is the official announcement), and the one at Ben Gurion University (BGU) involves the collection, processing, and inversion of a vector aeromagnetic survey (for more details on the project and how to apply, please email me).
We aim to fill both positions by 01/01/2026.

Please forward this job posting to potentially interested candidates. Postdocs are also welcome to apply for the BGU position. In this case, the duration of employment would be slightly shorter.

🚨 PhD Opportunity at Durham University – Exploring Heat, Fluids & Fractures

How do fractures in granite influence the transport of heat and metals  through the Earth’s crust? This PhD will explore how these faults and fractures control fluid flow, geothermal potential, and mineralisation in the Weardale Granite.

🔬 The project – “Fluid transport of heat and metals: understanding the formation of highly permeable fracture systems in granite” – will look to unravel how magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes control deformation and fluid migration.

You’ll investigate:
🪨 The emplacement and deformation history of the Weardale Granite
💦 How fluid pathways and fissures form and evolve in crystalline rocks
🌡️ What this means for geothermal energy potential and critical metal resources

This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with an interest in tectonics, structural geology, and sustainable subsurface resources — bridging classic field geology with modern techniques and critical applications.

📍 Based at: Durham University (Department of Earth Science)
🎓 Supervised by: Ken McCaffrey, Madeleine Humphreys and Mark Ireland
🕒 Application deadline: Home (UK) applicants - 5th January and International applicants 8th December.

CASE Partner: Weardale Lithium Ltd

Project funding would be via an application to the Iapetus NERC Doctoral Training Partnership 2025/26 competition

An exiting PhD Opportunity at Newcastle University in collaboration with Durham University

We are looking for an enthusiastic student to join our research group.

The project focuses on turbidity currents and investigates their control on organic carbon transport to deep sea. You will be collaborating with a larger international research team and might have an opportunity to join a sea going research for further data collection.. spread the word!

📍 Based at: Newcastle University
🎓 Supervised by: Sanem Acikalin, Matthieu Cartigny
🕒 Application deadline: Home (UK) applicants - 5th January and International applicants 8th December.
